1 Copywriting Tip
Tip: Mock to Prove Your Point
If you don't already know, humor is my favorite way to write entertaining copy.
Having seen a lot of stand-up comedy and roasts, today's copywriting tip is inspired from a personal trick I admire.
And the best part is that any brand can use it as a way to lighten the mood while still amplifying their argument...
The trick is...
Mocking.
It means to playfully poke fun at certain behaviors or situations to highlight how your product is the better alternative.
It's simple, not subtle. But a great way to put your point across in a memorable way. You know why? Because it feels like a friend is telling you a joke related to some shared experience.
Plus, it's not just limited to the comedic value. Mocking can be used to bring out a couple different themes in messaging.
Like:
→ Highlighting a problem
→ Managing an objection
→ Making them feel seen
→ Showing up confident
→ Stating facts
And so much more.
Let me show you some examples to demonstrate what I mean...
2 Examples
1. Timberland
Two simple lines but they highlight so much. Including brand loyalty and a standout feature.
This feels like giving advice to a friend in a roasting kinda way and that's why it feels so raw and real.
2. Porsche
If you were planning to upgrade to a Porsche just because your friend bought one, this line might be the final nail in the coffin before you can start planning on how to afford it.
If you think you have a fast car, wait until you see the best one passing you by in a flash.
Good copy talks and mocks.
3 Tactics for You
1. The "Good Luck with That" Approach
Mock at your competitors over-engineered solutions.
Think of it like Apple Notes mocking Notion for being too fancy.
2. The "Last Minute Mentality" Approach
Think of it like the "I don't need to write it down because I'll remember it later" syndrome
Delaying things until the last minute and then settling for a mediocre option needs to be ridiculed and mockery is a great way to do that.
3. The "Who Needs More Expensive" Approach
If your product is high on value and low on price, mock your audience to make them aware that they don't need to spend more to get better.
They can get the best at a price that makes sense.
And that's what your product is.
Well, that’s all I have for you today 🤝
