1 Copywriting Tip

Tip: Make It Interactive

80% of the ads are selling you something straight. I don't mind them. That's their job

But...

The rest 20% are either brand campaigns or the ones where the marketing team doesn't know how to make ads.

But here's one thing that people miss: It should be interesting and entertaining.

Yes you can talk about a problem

Yes you can talk about an objection

And yes you can show them a positive future

But...

Those are more direct response style messaging tactics.

Don't get me wrong. They're brilliant ones and work almost all the time.

But if I were to try and make my ads more fun, here's what I'd do:

I'd make them interactive.

Means...I'd get people to DO SOMETHING while they're consuming the ads.

I'm not talking about clickbait, fancy hook techniques or a bizarre way to hold their attention.

I'm talking about engagement.

I know this sounds a little hazy right now but as always the examples below will make them clear...

2 Examples

1. Derbyshire County Council

I’d remember this ad for sure.

Because it made me read the same headline thrice.

Everytime I read it, I got more engaged and when I finally found the message right, I was impressed.

It’s so simple and self-referential.

I wish more brands did this.

But if you’re a marketer, brand/agency owner, or a copywriter, NOW YOU CAN!

2. Pepsodent

A killer idea. A standout headline. And results?

Sales went up from 7% to 65% with this interactive approach.

We learn by doing. That’s why your ads need to be engaging.

Kind of like the proof is in the pudding thing except you’re not merely looking at the pudding but also eating it to experience the difference for yourself.

3 Tactics for You

1. Find Interesting Talking points

Research isn't just competitor, product or brand research. You gotta be able to look at things differently and take people on the journey with you.

If you want to make it interactive, involve people.

How? By finding things to do with a prize at the end.

Like the Pepsodent ad. It walked readers through a problem with a payoff in the form of a solution towards the end.

2. Create a Sense of Urgency

Whatever action you're making them do should have immediate stakes. The payoff should be quick so there's instant gratification and a reason to be involved even further.

Nobody likes to take action 3 days after reading. Make them do it now.

Be quick.

3. Turn Your Ad Into a Game

Give them a task so your readers are more involved.

If they're involved, they're engaged and if they're engaged, they'll be much more likely to comply with your requests.

Well, that’s all I have for you today 🤝
