Tip: Use customer reviews to write headlines
If you've been following this newsletter for a while, you know how much I prioritize research.
Because I believe that your customers bring out the true perspective of your product.
On one hand, social proof is a great psychological trigger.
We all know how people feel more compelled to buy when they see reviews, ratings and testimonials.
But there's another side to it too.
As a copywriter and creative strategist, don't just focus on writing. But also discovering.
This especially works well with static ads.
Here's the trick: Look for what Dara Denney calls "Golden Nugget" reviews.
These are more detailed reviews which have certain words or phrases that stand out.
And if it catches your attention, chances are it will do the same for your potential customers too.
The best repurpose of these golden nugget reviews? Turn them into short yet compelling headlines.
Here's why I think it works so well:
1. The writing is simple, clear and relatable. These people express to be understood so it comes from a place of authenticity.
2. They're not rooting for the product. They're rooting for the solutions for their problems so you discover better insights.
3. Some people are naturally sassy and witty. So their way of writing is an eye-opener.
Something that you might not have been able to do because you're too caught up with the brand, product and competitors.
When you shift your focus from just writing well to discovering better, you allow room for real "strategy".
Now onto some great examples…

1. The Perfect Jean
This was an ad made by Adcrate and I've learned a lot about creative strategy from their head Alex Cooper.
Look at how simple yet casual this headline is.
As per Alex, it was taken directly from a customer review.
And since the product is super simple, it works so well.

2. Flings
This headline can put this product into a whole new category of healthy and tasty snack that's better than an existing product on the market.
That's the power of a good "Golden Nugget" review.
It helps you find angles.
3 Tactics for You
1. Take AI's Help
Use the ChatGPT prompt in this post to find golden nugget reviews faster.
2. Edit and Refine
It's not necessary to take the customer reviews verbatim. Use can play with words to create a fresh headline that follows the same thought-process and ideas.
Look at the Flings example.
3. Look Elsewhere Too
The best customer copy isn't just found in reviews. Plus, if you're a new brand, you might not even have a lot of those.
Also look at Amazon reviews, ad comments, YouTube comments, competitor reviews and even Reddit.
Or anywhere else your ideal audience hangs out and likes posting opinions.
